Yahoo! Kids

Common Sense Media says

Mostly tame entertainment portal has iffy off-site links.

Quality

  • Encourages kids to be well-rounded and knowledgeable.
  • Some movie trailers might be dark and scary for young kids. Headline news content may include photos of uncomfortable topics such as war, death, and/or destruction happening in the world.
  • Music videos may include men and women wearing skimpy clothing or couples kissing.
  • Mild swear words like "damn" appear in song lyrics in the video section.
  • Ads are in designated areas, but feature iffy things such as sugary snacks. Many of the games, videos, and more feature commercial brands. Some ecards and games are sponsored.
  • Yahoo! may ask for personal information to register new users, however it is not necessary when using this site. Personal information is only taken from people who 13 years of age or older. The information is used to customize advertisements for marketing purposes, but never given to third parties unless responding to court orders, according to the site's privacy policy. External links may take users off the site and into areas where privacy and safety are not guaranteed.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Yahoo! Kids -- formerly known as Yahooligans -- is Yahoo's answer to an online world for kids. Ads here are relatively tame: in designated areas and with only some pop-ups (although sugary snack ads top the list). Full-length music videos and television shorts are available, with no violence or nudity found. Some movie trailers are dark and could be scary for young kids. The site's fun educational tools include an easy-to-use encyclopedia, animal glossaries, a conversion calculator, as well as the news hub. All of the sections provide an additional list of related online resources that link to an outside Yahoo directory (in the jokes section, for example, Garfield, Will Farrell, surveys, trivia, and humor are listed in a table) -- so with one click you could be off the site and into less kid-friendly territory.
