Splatalot

Common Sense Media says

Messy game show offers little substance to young viewers.

Quality

  • A few of the obstacles require some critical thinking on the players' part, but for the most part, the game rewards qualities like physical strength and perseverance.
  • The show's competitive nature encourages fair play and determination. All of the players' victories are celebrated, but those who excel particularly enjoy the thrill of victory.
  • All of the contestants are good sports about their wins and losses and seem to have fun playing the game. The show's cast members, including the hosts, engage in some good-natured ribbing at the players' expense, teasing them when they fall or miss their mark. None of it's intended to hurt the kids' feelings, and they seem no worse for the wear.
  • No violence, but the contestants take lots of spills and tumbles. But no one is hurt, thanks to the extensive safety pads they wear.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the game show Splatalot is a game show with very little iffy stuff, but not a lot of substance. Kids face a series of physical obstacles and some opponents armed with slippery slime and water, so the nature of the challenges favors body strength, determination, and even basic luck more than thoughtful strategy -- but there's still some value in seeing how the contestants cope with victory and defeat. Expect some mild trash-talking on the part of the hosts and the adult cast members, plus many replays of the kids' missteps, designed to maximize laughs. Though it's not intended to hurt the contestants' feelings, it does offer a great opening to talk with your kids about bullying.

Great show
I like this show. It comes after one of my favorite shows, Figure It Out.

Not the best or worst
I'm not a big fan of this show. I've seen around 7 episodes and none of them really entertained me. The same things seem to happen: splat in this spot, fall in that one. I don't like that the hosts trash-talk either. It's mild but kids might pick up on that, and there's really not much substance, as the reviewer said. So unless you are a hardcore game show fan I wouldn't recommend viewing this show often.
