Common Sense Media says

Retro style series takes fashion seriously; some smoking.

  • The celebrities and fashion insiders spotlighted on House of Style are treated as people of substance and artists; however, the show's emphasis on appearance and looks may bother parents who wish their kids to focus on inner, not outer, beauty.
  • Hard-working fashion businesspeople frequently discuss how they got where they are and how they do what they do. Segments featuring musical acts trying on or shopping for clothing may have questionable messages, with musicians who curse, drink onscreen, talk about sex in a vulgar way, and the like.
  • Not applicable.
  • Scantily dressed models, mostly female but sometimes male, are common, sometimes backstage getting dressed, sometimes in revealing clothing on the runway. No nudity, but fashions may be shocking, i.e. partially bared breasts or buttocks.
  • Some cursing: "ass," "bitch." Cursing is usually in jest: "Bitch, please!" rather than "You bitch!"
  • Logos of fashion labels are frequently shown onscreen, as are designers and their clothing lines. Segments feature fashionable clothing and accessories viewers are urged to buy, with the price of each item and the name of the designer who made it spotlighted. Not all brands are relevant to a modern audience.
  • Some House of Style guests may drink and smoke onscreen, as in when they're interviewed holding drinks while on the red carpet, or interviewed with a smoldering cigarette in an ashtray. There are infrequent references to drugs, like when one musician/fashionista wears leather pants imprinted with marijuana leaves.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that House of Style is an infotainment show featuring segments relating to fashion that vary widely in content and appropriateness. Many segments are innocuous looks at particular designers or trends. Others are more questionable, with musicians gyrating in transparent clothing or slipping into and out of bikinis. Some celebrities drink or smoke onscreen, and refer to drugs obliquely, as by wearing clothing featuring marijuana leaves. There is some cursing: "ass," "bitch," but usually used in jest rather as a personal insult. No nudity is shown, but many fashions partially reveal breasts or buttocks, and scantily clad women are frequently onscreen. Models, particularly "supermodels," are venerated on House of Style, which may set up unrealistic expectations about looks, particularly for teens.
