NOTE: BEFORE READING THIS REVIEW, YOU MAY WANT TO WATCH THE MOVIE, OR READ THE BREIF SYNOPISIS GIVEN ABOVE. THERE ARE SPOILERS. SO BEWARE!! (BUT TRUST ME, YOU WON'T BE MISSING MUCH IF YOU KEEP READING.)
This movie is kind of dumb, and there are more than a few reasons why I'm not crazy about it. First off-when the parents [inevitably] get back together in the end, it happens because the dad goes after the mom. After she walks away from him. For the fourth time. STOP! It was the mother's fault in the first place for deserting her family. She was looking for a 'knight in shining armor' [as the voice over in the beginning of the movie so nicely states] to come after her every time she ran away from her problems instead of growing up and facing them. The mom broke up the family, so therefore the dad should be the one to fix it. Right? I mean, what are we all stupid? Yes, apparently we are. Maybe the dad should've attempted to speak with the mother after she left, but it seemed like she was to immature to admit that she was the one who broke the covenant they made; not him. Personally, I would've been much more satisfied with the ending if the mom had owned up and admitted she was in the wrong. Also, I felt like the movie tried to be cute and upbeat, but threw hard topics like divorce, and parental separation, together with surface-y topics like match making and "love" at first sight. I thought that the whole "dad-was-cupid" thing could've been funny, but it was also sort of thrown in the mix at a random time, much like when the twins found out they had "magical powers". There wasn't enough explanation behind how their dad was cupid to make it believable (Or as believable as possible under the circumstances). Overall, I'd give this movie three stars, and say that it's okay for kids ages nine and up. You never know-it might spark a fantastic family discussion.
