  • The game starts easy, regardless of which difficulty level the player chooses, but ramps up the difficulty quickly. The controls are easy to use and offer players a variety of choices without penalty.
  • You'll spend the majority of the game blowing things up and shooting enemy troops from atop your three-story battle turtle. There's no blood or gore, however, nor any screams of anguish.

  • A link from the main menu lists other games by the developer. The game also offers in-app purchases of in-game currency, for prices ranging from $1 to $10. This money can be used to upgrade your weapons. You can earn the money playing through the levels, but it comes at a much slower pace.
  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender's email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Shellrazer is an action/arcade game that doesn't shy away from over-the-top violence and story. Players control a three-story high turtle cannon as they fight their way through enemy orcs and goblins. While the violence is nonstop and features all sorts of explosions and dispatched enemy troops, there's no blood or gore. Kids may be tempted to buy in-game currency with real money to upgrade their turtles' weapons; parents can use their phone's restrictions to block in-app purchases. Players can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.
