  • Playing is easy; filling the crates is hard. Tiles can be rearranged for fresh ideas manually or by shaking the device. The game also offers one free bird (free word) and beak sneaks, which fill in one letter.

  • A button on the menu links directly to the App Store.
  • Some privacy concerns. If kids tap a word to see a definition, they are moved out of the app to a web search for the term. Players can connect the game to Facebook, where they can share high scores with people they've friended. Additionally, players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender's email address. Players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Chicktionary is a fun "edutainment" word game with a poultry theme. The goal of Chicktionary is to create as many words as possible from seven letters displayed on a row of cartoon hens. There are many levels, and play can be timed or untimed so the game can be shared between kids. If kids choose to see a definition of their word, they are taken to a web search that can contain unrelated results. There is a free HD version for iPad that has a few additional features and is supported by in-app banner ads. Players can share high scores by connecting the app to Facebook or via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

Great word game for adults and children alike
I enjoy playing this word game, and was pleasantly surprised to find my 2nd grader enjoyed it as well. We can sit together and work through one of the word puzzles. Of course, it's great fun for mom to do solo as well!
