Kinectimals

Common Sense Media says

Fab lion cub pet sim with treasure hunt theme for Kinect.

  • The pet simulation part teaches about caring for animals and how important it is to look out for their needs. The adventure part of the game sends the message that going on a treasure hunt is fun and that practicing a game is the best way to improve a skill.
  • A magical flying cat named Bumble serves as your guide and helper. He is very supportive of you. And the baby wild cats are tremendously affectionate and always interested and supportive of you.
  • This Kinect game showcases the magic of using no controllers -- just your body. Petting, cleaning, and caring for your cubs is simple because you just reach out and do what you would do with a pet in real life. Using arm and hand motions to navigate the game also works remarkably well. Some of the physical challenges like playing volleyball with your cub take practice, but it is all about getting the timing down.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Kinectimals is a pet sim/adventure game played using the Microsoft's Kinect peripheral. You are transported to a magical island where you befriend a group of wild cat babies, including tiger, panther, and lion cubs. While caring for and playing games with them, you also explore the island looking for possible treasure hidden there by a pirate. The game does a great job of combining the pet simulation genre with a fun adventure filled with mini-games.

My three and 1/2 year old tries to play this, but this is hard to do. My seven year old loves it, and does very well playing it. The ferret that narrates it is so annoying.

Kids love it.
The kids have SO much fun playing this game, which gets them moving and thinking unlike many TV shows. My 3 year old has a little trouble following the directions, but he can get it with his siblings or me helping. What is amazing, is that kids won't have to learn to use the controller, just use their hands on the UI.

Parent played, kid approved
Just make sure there is enough room to play and people don't accidentally injure themselves or each other if you are playing with two players. Otherwise, this is my son's favorite Kinect game and it is a lot of fun for him whether he is playing it or watching others play it.
