  • The heroes, young and old, behave recklessly, often stupidly, and at
times illegally, but because their intentions are good that's portrayed
    as admirable.
  • Noah and Abbey lie to their parents, sneak out at night, and take
reckless risks. Their father is also impulsive and reckless, and has
been in and out of jail. Their grandfather was involved with thieves
    and smugglers.
  • Noah is beaten by bullies, and threatened with a gun and chased by a hired goon. A character is thought to have been killed. Abbey bites people hard enough to draw blood.

  • Moderate swearing, plus a wide variety of euphemisms for sewage.
  • Not applicable.
  • Two teens drink and smoke a cigar, patrons on a gambling boat, as well as other adult characters, drink to excess.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is an ends-justify-the-means kind of book: The heroes, young and old, behave recklessly, often stupidly, and at times illegally, but because their intentions are good that's portrayed as admirable. Also, as the main topic is the illegal dumping of sewage, there's a fair amount of potty humor.

This book deals with the complexity of behavior that we often find in real life. It is a good conversation starter for children who are old enough and mature enough to start to think about the gray areas in terms of good vs bad. While the role models are by and large not positive, their behavior is a good starting point for a conversation with children about how better to handle the situations that the characters find themselves in. Read it with your kids.

I hate it! It did not keep me hooked the entire time I was reading..I would never recommend this book to anyone who wanted a good book. There is too much confusion and the book was just plain awful...NEVER READ THIS BOOK!

Sweet, clumsy family film about saving owls.

Action-packed, emotional dad-son baseball story.

Wicked is the key word here, in all its senses.
